What is the ARFID?
ARFID is an eating disorder that is characterized by eating a very limited variety or amount of food. It is different from other eating disorders in that people with ARFID do not worry much about how much they weight. Instead, they are usually worried about novel foods having intense tastes, textures, or smells, and often find it safer to eaten a limited range of foods that feel safe. Some people with ARFID also don’t feel hungry very often or get full quickly, and think that eating is a chore.
Why is ARFID a problem? People with ARFID are at risk for health problems associated with losing too much weight or not getting enough nutrients. Social problems are also common, with many people with ARFID struggling to be social and eat with others.
How do you treat ARFID?I treat ARFID using CBT for ARFID, which is a highly researched treatment for ARFID. I will work with you and/or your child to help achieve and maintain a healthy weight, eat foods from the five basic food groups, and feel more comfortable eating in social situations. We will set goals to face your fears, and work systematically to increase food volume and/or variety, gain exposures to feared foods, taste small amounts first, and then slowly work to incorporate larger amounts.
What experience does Sala Psychotherapy with treating ARFID?Dr. Sala completed CBT for ARFID training from the Massachusetts General Hospital.
