What is binge eating disorder?
Binge eating disorder is the most common eating disorder, and is characterized by episodes of eating large quantities of food with a feeling of a loss of control during the binge. People with binge eating disorder do not engage in compensatory measures (e.g., purging). People with binge eating disorder often experience feelings of disgust, shame, or guilt after binge eating.
What are some symptoms and warning signs of binge eating disorder?
We treat emotional eating using Mindfulness and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) strategies to help you regulate your emotions in more adaptive ways. We will work with you to help you become more aware and accepting of your emotions, help you cope with difficult emotions in more adaptive ways, help you become more aware of hunger and fullness cues, distinguish physical from emotional hunger, help you indulge without overeating by savoring and mindfully eating food, and teach you strategies to "ride out" cravings and urges.
How do you treat binge eating disorder?
We use Dr. Fairburn's Enhanced Cognitive Behavioral Treatment to treat binge eating disorder in late adolescents and adults. CBT is a treatment for eating disorders with the strongest scientific evidence. We will work with you to implement behavioral strategies including the establishment of a regular pattern of eating, stopping binge episodes, systematic exposure to forbidden foods, create motivation for change, and challenge disturbance in the experience of shape and weight as well as the tie between personal identity and the eating disorder. We also integrate mindfulness and acceptance techniques to help you regulate emotions and disengage from eating disordered thoughts.
What experience do you have treating binge eating disorder?
Dr. Sala has extensive training in treating binge eating disorder, including experience at inpatient eating disorder units and a decade-long research career working with leaders in the field. Dr. Sala is the Director of the Mindfulness, Eating Disorders, and Acceptance Lab (MEAL) at Yeshiva University, where she conducts eating disorder treatment research.
